About this dashboard

An independent, auto-updating view of the U.S. Medicare Advantage market — built from CMS's monthly public files.

Overview

The dashboard aggregates CMS's contract-level enrollment files into a parent-organization view of the Medicare Advantage and Part D market. It surfaces month-over-month and year-over-year change for the top parents, market-share dynamics, state-level penetration, and provider-specific spotlights for the largest carriers.

Currently displaying May 2026 contract enrollment of 61,345,989 beneficiaries across 16 tracked parent organizations.

Raw files come from CMS · MA / Part D Contract and Enrollment Data. Enrollment counts under 11 are masked by CMS (HIPAA); those contracts contribute zero in the rollups.

How it updates

An automated job checks CMS for new monthly files daily during the typical release window (mid-month, roughly the 14th–22nd). When a new contract, state, or penetration file lands, the dashboard rebuilds end-to-end and redeploys to cmsdash.io within minutes.

Currently holding 22 months of contract-level history (Jun 2024 → May 2026). All sparklines and the market-share chart use the trailing 24 months.

Methodology notes
  • Parent rollup. CMS publishes at the contract level; we map each contract to a parent organization using a curated list of name-and-alias matchers (16 tracked parents). Plans that don't match any tracked parent stay in the implicit “other plans” residual.
  • Star Ratings. Reported per-contract; rolled up to parent as a member-weighted average of the Overall MA-PD Star using current-month enrollment as weights. Contracts without ratings are excluded from the weighted denominator.
  • Top YoY Grower. Largest absolute year-over-year net add among tracked parents, computed as current_enrollment − enrollment_12mo_ago. The percentage shown on the tile is the same change divided by the prior-year base.
  • State filter. A provider is considered to operate in a state only when the cumulative enrolled count there is at least 5,000 — this avoids matching trivial spillover contracts.
  • Active CMS contracts. Count of unique contract IDs in the latest monthly file (across all parents, including untracked).

Caveats & limitations
  • CMS masks contracts with enrollment under 11; small-market totals can be modestly understated.
  • Parent matching uses string-based aliases. Recent M&A or rebrands may take a cycle to reflect.
  • Star Ratings are released annually each fall; current ratings carry forward until the next release.
  • Ticker links on the table use likely symbols for publicly traded parents — privately held parents and government-aligned blues show “—”.
  • This site is independent of CMS and is not affiliated with any plan sponsor.
